FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Vietnam Veteran Michael J. Bartley Receives Jefferson High School Diploma Through Operation Recognition
Charles Town, WV – September 13, 2024
Jefferson County Schools is proud to announce that Michael J. Bartley, a Vietnam Conflict veteran, has earned his high school diploma more than five decades after his service through the WVDE Operation Recognition initiative. A resident of Martinsburg and a U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Bartley attended Shepherdstown High School from 1971 to 1972 before leaving to serve his country. The intimate ceremony was held at Shepherdstown Middle School, formerly Shepherdstown High School, before the opening of Jefferson High School.
A proud “farm boy and hunter” at the time of his enlistment, Mr. Bartley was in excellent shape when he joined the U.S. Army. He fondly remembers Shepherdstown High School as a welcoming and family-oriented community, noting that the students and staff immediately made him feel accepted. His teachers, Coach Kessel and Mr. Coyle left a lasting impression on him. Mr. Coyle’s stories of his military service inspired Mr. Bartley to serve his country.
After leaving school, Mr. Bartley served three years of active duty and three years in the reserve, where he was part of the 4th Infantry Division and 8th Infantry Division - Headquarters Battalion, serving in the 2nd 81st Artillery as a Specialist 4th Class. His time in the military was marked by dedication and resilience. After years of service to his country, he has finally achieved a personal milestone by completing his high school education. When asked why he wanted to do this now, Bartley said, " I want to set an example for my grandchildren."
Today, Mr. Bartley’s achievement is being celebrated with his family by his side: his son, Joshua Bartley, daughter-in-law, Glenda Bartley, and grandson, Brayden Bartley, who have gathered to honor his dedication to both his country and his education. Members of the Shepherdstown High School Alumni Association also attended the event. His diploma was presented by Ms. Rebecca Horn, Principal of Shepherdstown Middle School.
