The Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBOE) has named Donald Showen as Washington High School's (WHS) new principal. Mr. Showen is a familiar face to the WHS community, having taught at the school for eight years before serving as assistant principal for the past five years. Mr. Showen said he is excited to step into the new role.
"It will be a change in a lot of ways, but at the same time, I've developed some strong relationships at the school with the students, teachers, staff, and the community."
Mr. Showen said he expects to hit the ground running when he gets to work in January with a phenomenal team already in place.
"We have a wonderful leadership team here that keeps things moving in the right direction," he said. "I am looking forward to taking the next steps with them as the principal."
Mr. Showen is only the second principal at WHS. He replaces Judy Marcus, who has been principal since the school opened. Ms. Marcus recently applied for and was named the High School Coordinator for Jefferson County Schools.
Mr. Showen said it benefits students to have Ms. Marcus in the county and anticipates being able to work with her as the new principal.
"She's been supportive, and I think that will continue."
Mr. Showen received his bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from Shepherd College (University) and his master's degree in Educational Leadership from Salem University. He begins his new role as principal on January 2.
