SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State Fire Marshal commended three Driswood Elementary School (DES) students for their original artwork depicting an understanding of fire safety. Kindergartener Aubrey Brumback, first grader Alora Cooper, and fifth grader Sophia Mriscin are among a dozen winners in the Mountain State's annual fire safety poster contest held each October during Fire Prevention Month. A 2024 wall calendar will feature all 12 winning entries.
The annual competition is part of a public education campaign by the Office of the State Fire Marshal to encourage students in kindergarten through fifth grade to make safe choices in the event of a fire in their home. Two winners from each grade level are chosen from participating counties statewide.
State Fire Marshal Kenneth E. Tyree visited DES on November 2 to personally congratulate Brumback, Cooper, and Mriscin. Each student received an award and a framed copy of their artwork. The occasion marked the second win for Mriscin, whose first-grade entry appeared in the 2020 calendar.
Congratulations to our talented young artists on this notable recognition!
