JCS is excited to partner with WVU Medicine and Blue Ridge Community and Technical College on the new MedEd program for high school juniors and seniors! Beginning in Fall 2023, this FREE two-year program will offer students from Jefferson and Washington High Schools a direct career path into the healthcare industry, including a paid internship for second-year students. Jefferson County Schools puts the safety of our students at the forefront of all we do. Our staff receives training on numerous protocols and practices to ensure student safety in our schools. An employee at Jefferson High School used that training on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, when they reported another employee for allegedly making inappropriate comments to a student in an aggressive manner. Following our safety protocol, the employee was immediately removed, and we contacted law enforcement to initiate an investigation. The families of impacted students have been notified. Any inappropriate behavior verified as part of the ongoing investigation will be shared with those involved as part of our partnership with our families in keeping kids safe.
Congratulations to JCS FFA students on their strong showing in the West Virginia State FFA Winter Career Developments competition at West Virginia University! Participating chapters included Charles Town Middle (CTMS), Harpers Ferry Middle (HFMS), Shepherdstown Middle (SMS), Jefferson High School (JHS), and Washington High School (WHS). Several teams received top placements in the competition, with JHS FFA's Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems Team claiming its second consecutive state title to represent West Virginia at the national contest in October! JCS middle schoolers received a message of kindness and positivity as they headed into the winter break. Author and educator Jefferson J. Jones visited all four middle schools as part of a district-wide focus on anti-bullying and emotional intelligence development. Dec. 21: All Jefferson County Schools and offices will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, Dec. 22, based on the timing of anticipated frozen precipitation. Please remember that winter break begins on Friday, Dec. 23, and that students will not return to school until Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023. Have a safe and happy holiday.

Dec. 16, 2022: A Jefferson County School Bus was involved in an accident this morning on Summit Point Rd. and Lloyd Rd. There were no students on the bus and no injuries have been reported.
After consulting with state weather officials and the state department of highways, we have determined that in the interest of student and staff safety, all Jefferson County Schools and offices will be closed onΒ Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022. We ask essential personnel to contact their supervisor for direction. We are grateful for your support as we work to keep students and staff safe.
EARLY DISMISSAL: Driswood Elementary School will dismiss students at 1:00 PM TODAY, Dec. 14, due to a water main break. Our partners at JUI will delay their repairs so students can eat lunch ahead of dismissal. This only impacts Driswood Elementary School students. We're pleased to bring holiday cheer to neurodiverse students and their families again this year with the second annual ο»ΏJCS Sensory Santa! This event gives sensory-sensitive children and their families a chance to visit Santa in a calmer, less-chaotic environment. The fun continues the weekend thanks to our student and staff volunteers!

Dec. 7, 2022: Jefferson County Schools has been made aware of a nationwide series of false active shooter threats being made against schools. Several 911 centers and law enforcement agencies around West Virginia have already received these calls, including one against Washington High School in Jefferson County. We have confirmed that the local threat was NOT CREDIBLE; however, we are continuing to work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the safety of our students and staff at all of our schools.

National Special Education Day commemorates the signing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) into law in 1975, granting children with special needs access to free and quality public education.
